Undescended testes might resolve without any intervention by the time that the infant is 3-6 months old. Resolution occurs as the testicles descend from the inguinal canal into the scrotal sac. If the testicles (or testes) have not descended by 6 months of age, the testicles may not descend at all, and will require surgery.
-
To maximize testicular function and fertility (most common in bilateral cases, where both testes are affected)
-
To allow a patient to more easily perform self examination of the testicle for tumors , which is important when he reaches puberty.
-
To repair the inguinal hernia associated with the UDT
-
To prevent testicular torsion (a painful twisting of the testes that can decrease blood supply to the testes)
-
to minimize compression injury risk of the inguinal testicle and
-
to minimize the psychological consequences of an empty scrotum
