How likely is reflux to resolve?
Grade 1 and 2 have about 80 %, grade 3 about 50%, and grades 4 and 5 about 20 %.
Are long term antibiotic prophylaxis harmful?
There is no eveidence that long term antibiotic prohylaxis is harmful to a person or their immune system. It is true that if a patient on prophylaxis develops and infection, it may be resistant to the antibiotic they are taking. However , the resistance disappears soon after stopping the antibiotic. Also it makes sense to take the antibiotic, especially if the patient has shown themselves prone to recurrent infections.
Does VUR cause infections?
Most people do not think that VUR will increase the risk of UTI, but if a person does develop UTI, then VUR may increase risk to develop a kidney infection, (fever, backpain, vomiting), as opposed to a simple bladder infection, (frequency, urgency, urinary burning)
Are all kidneys injured by VUR?
Some people may have VUR but not know it because they never had an infection . VUR without infection does not seem to injure kidneys, except perhaps prenatally, when the kidney might not be able to grow to its optimal size.
