Penis Problems - Frequently Asked Questions

Overview | Diagnosis | Treatment | FAQ

How can I tell if I have genital warts and how are they treated?

Genital human papillomavirus (HPV), commonly called genital warts, are transmitted by sexual contact. Most sexually active people in the US will have HPV at some time in their lives. HPV can appear as flat, raised or cauliflower-like lesions on the skin of the penis or scrotum. They appear within weeks or months after sex with an infected person. They are usually asymptomatic. There is no test designed to test for HPV in men. The HPV vaccine is only approved for women ages 9-26 years. Genital warts may stay the same, disappear on their own, or grow in size or number. Treatments for HPV include surgical removal, application of topical agents, or destruction with liquid nitrogen, laser or electrocautery. HPV often reoccur after treatment. Condoms may protect the area covered by the condom but exposed skin can become infected. A healthy immune system will usually protect individuals from serious problems secondary to HPV.

Can a Peyronie’s plaque lead to cancer?dr unger treats penis problems in north carolina

Peyronie’s plaques are not precancerous lesions. A Peyronie’s plaque feels firm because the plaque is composed of collagen – the same tissue that makes scar tissue feel firm. If the plaque becomes impregnated with calcium deposits, it can feel ‘rock hard’, but this does not increase the chance of the plaque becoming cancerous.

How does Peyronie’s Disease cause erectile dysfunction?

Normal erections require symmetrical expansion of two paired cylinders within the penis called corpora cavernosa. The outer layer of the corporal ‘bodies’ are composed of thick fibrous tissue. The inner portion of the corpora contain smooth muscle tissue and blood vessels that communication with each other through a septum that separates the two corporal bodies. In addition to causing curvature of the penis, Peyronie’s Disease can interfere with the elasticity of the smooth muscle tissue that is responsible for normal erections. Diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol are three other conditions that adversely affect corporal smooth muscle function.
