Nocturnal Enuresis

Nocturnal enuresis, or bedwetting, is the involuntary urination that occurs during sleep in someone who is normally able to control their bladder when awake. There are several theories for why this occurs, but the exact cause is not known. It may be affected by another medical condition such as constipation or obstructive sleep apnea, or it could be something physiologic with their sleep cycle that they will outgrow in time. Treatment is not always necessary, as children often reach a stage where this resolves, but there are a variety of options to achieve dryness if this condition is causing the child stress and/or disrupting social environments. Meeting with your pediatric team will involve discussion of your child's medical history as well as developing a treatment strategy specific to their goals.
