Urinary Infrequency Q & A

What is Urinary Infrequency?

Generally, a healthy adult should urinate greater than 13 ounces of fluid every 24 hours. For most people, this means urinating at least three times a day. If you notice that you rarely urinate, it could be indicative of oliguria, or decreased urine output.

Oliguria could be caused by something simple like dehydration, but it can also be a sign of another underlying health condition. Urinary infrequency isn’t something to ignore. Don’t hesitate to talk to the Associated Urologists of North Carolina.

What Causes Urinary Infrequency?

Several things can cause urinary infrequency, including:

  • Dehydration
  • An obstruction in the urinary tract
  • Infection
  • Certain medications, including blood pressure medications and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)

On top of these conditions, pain while urinating can cause people, especially children, to put off urinating.

Is Urinary Infrequency Serious?

Yes. Chronic urinary infrequency is a sign that something is wrong in your body. Even when your infrequency is caused by something simple like dehydration, it’s important not to ignore it. Chronic dehydration poses a serious threat to your health.

If a blockage in your urinary tract causes your urinary infrequency, you must get treatment right away. If you don’t, your body’s resulting inability to expel waste can do significant damage to your kidneys. It can even send you into shock. Seek emergency medical care if you experience urinary infrequency in combination with dizziness, lightheadedness, or a rapid pulse.

What’s more, chronic urinary infrequency is linked to other issues in your body, including:

  • Anemia
  • Hypertension
  • Gastrointestinal issues
  • Heart failure

Who Does Urinary Infrequency Affect?

Urinary infrequency can affect both adults and children. In children, urinary infrequency throughout the day can cause bed wetting at night or daytime wetting. If you notice that your child is urinating fewer than three times a day, don’t hesitate to talk to the Associated Urologists of North Carolina. Their dedicated pediatric health team can help you and your child resolve urinary infrequency.

Whether urinary infrequency is affecting you or your child, the Associated Urologists of North Carolina is here to help. Call any of their offices across North Carolina or schedule your appointment online today.
